Living together and being legal cohabitants are different situations. Review housing, shared spending and expectations before making a declaration.

## Understand the rule

Legal cohabitation requires a declaration to the municipality of the shared home. It creates certain protections and duties but does not have all the effects of marriage. Family and property issues need separate assessment.

## Prepare your next steps

- Ask the municipality about conditions, documents and appointments. Sharing a registered address does not replace the declaration.
- List individual assets, debts and shared expenses. Preserve evidence of significant contributions to the home.
- Discuss additional protection with a notary, including suitable agreements and arrangements.

## Practical example

Fictional example: two people move into a home owned by one of them. Before paying jointly for renovations, they document contributions and seek advice about their effects.

## What to check

Protection on separation or death is not determined solely by registration. Parentage, pensions and tax have separate rules.

### Is it only for couples?

No. Subject to the applicable conditions, two people living together can declare legal cohabitation without being a couple.
