Preparing an appointment, changing doctors or trying to understand treatment? You can request access to your patient records.

## Understand the rule

Belgian patient-rights legislation provides for properly maintained records and rights of access and copying. The first copy is free. Specific restrictions apply, including for third-party information; access is not unlimited.

## Prepare your next steps

- Identify the professional or institution holding the documents. The national health portal may already show some results.
- Specify the period, department and records needed. Ask for secure delivery and explanations where necessary.
- Keep your request. If a document is missing, ask whether it is held elsewhere before assuming it does not exist.

## Practical example

Fictional example: before a second opinion, request imaging reports and the operation report. Check with the new doctor whether the received documents are sufficient.

## What to check

Specific rules apply to minors, people unable to exercise their rights and records after death. Relatives do not automatically have full access.

### Does a missing portal result mean it does not exist?

No. The portal does not necessarily replace the complete records held by a doctor or hospital. Ask the relevant holder.
