Notice period in Belgium: how long is it?

Employment law distinguishes dismissal, resignation, immediate termination with compensation and other endings.

The legal starting point

Employment law distinguishes dismissal, resignation, immediate termination with compensation and other endings. Notice depends on seniority and the applicable regime. From 1 August 2026, short periods apply in certain cases below six months of service for contracts starting from that date. Tenancy notice follows separate rules.

Documents to gather

The contract and amendments, payslips, starting date, working arrangements and received notices. Keep evidence of receipt.

Your next step

Write a short timeline and state the outcome you seek. Request a written explanation if an amount or decision seems wrong. Before signing, acknowledging a debt or allowing a deadline to pass, check the consequences for your circumstances. An amicable step does not automatically suspend a statutory deadline.
