AI: the EU-Canada dialogue does not automatically change business obligations
The digital dialogue held on 1 October 2026 covers AI safety and regulation. Its announcement creates no exemption or automatic recognition.

Cooperation announced on 1 October
A Belgian business using a Canadian AI service may follow discussions between Brussels and Ottawa. It cannot conclude that its obligations have changed. The European Commission announced an online digital dialogue with Canada on 1 October 2026. AI safety, regulation and innovation were on the agenda.
What the announcement does not change
The announcement describes cooperation. It does not publish an amendment to applicable law, a decision about a provider or a system of automatic recognition. Nor does it announce a new appeal procedure. This is the main limit of the news for professional users.
Separating three documents
Our practical analysis separates three documents: the institutional announcement, the rules actually applicable and the provider’s contract. They answer different questions. A press release explains a policy objective; a contract records commitments between parties; the applicable texts help identify legal obligations.
Before sending case files
Consider a fictional example: a Belgian firm is assessing an AI assistant advertised as meeting Canadian requirements. Before sending case files, it should ask which data are processed, by which entity, where they are stored and how they can be deleted. The dialogue announcement answers none of those questions and does not approve the service.
Our guide to AI Act questions for a law firm offers a method for describing uses and questioning the provider.
What to watch next
For the next steps, look for an identifiable result: an official text, its date, scope and implementation conditions. The dialogue opens a path for joint work. Any precise legal consequence must be checked against the documents that follow.
